What is Sports Psychology?
Sport psychology is the scientific study of the psychological factors that are associated
with participation and performance in sport, exercise, and other types of physical
activity. Sport psychology professionals are interested in two main objectives: (a)
helping athletes use psychological principles to improve performance (performance
enhancement) and (b) understanding how participation in sport, exercise, and physical
activity affects an individual's psychological development, health, and well-being
throughout the life span.
What do Sports Psychologists do?
There are two general types of sport psychologists, applied and academic. Applied sport
psychologists focus on professional practice and application of sport psychology in sport,
exercise, and physical activity settings. Typically, these individuals assist athletes
with performance enhancement and/or clinical issues, provide workshops for coaches and
administrators, or function as consultants to teams. Academic sport psychologists educate
consumers about sport psychology and conduct sport psychology research. These individuals
usually teach at colleges and universities, train sport psychology students, and may
provide sport psychology interventions for athletes, teams, and coaches.
How could I benefit from Sports Psychology?
Athletic performance can be enhanced by: 1) removing deficits and problems that are
interfering with an athletes performing to his/her skill level, and 2) assisting an
athlete through mental skills training to increase their skills and to perform at a new or
higher capacity. An athlete may be under-performing because of illness, injury,
psychological or other personal problems. An individual may wish to push potential and
performance to their very highest, to get an edge on their competition, or simply to do
the best they can at their sports activity.

Tapping into your own potential and achieving your goals requires an individualized
approach that will allow you to fully develop your mental and physical strengths.
